So, the Superbowl is coming up this weekend,
and I just have one question for you, a question that I have been asking for a loooooong time:

Why do they call it football?

I mean, the ball is actually in contact with someone's foot for maybe 1% of the game. Which makes it only slightly more of a foot sport than basketball, in which the only involvement the feet have is running around. The hands have more involvement in soccer (the real "football") than the feet do in American football, even if you don't count the goalie, because of how many throw-ins there are in a game. Who comes up with these silly ideas, anyways?

Maybe it's because the ball is shaped more like a foot than a ball. Or something......
2 of the favorite sports in the USA are so full of rules and exceptions that if you don't learn them as a kid, they will never make sense. But kids do learn those rules.
Back to football... My grandmother's name for it was piggie pile. Don't think that would make it nationally, tho.
Love you!

HA. I may not be good for much, but I can GOOGLE darn it!!

Soccer WAS originally called football (not even necessarily becuase it uses feet to kick, but becuase it's played on foot (versus horseback etc.) and then Association Football and then people started using soccer as a slang abbreviation for Association.

Sometime...before American football...also genesised Rugby football.

And then a bunch of people decided soccer and Rugby had too many rules, so they made up their own game (apparently without many original rules) and still called it football. And now it's morphed into American football, and nobody bothered to change the name. At least they don't play on horseback...

i'm as clueless when it comes to football as you are, and i grew up in the U.S. with cousins who played. and honestly, after spending so much time in latin america and hanging out with those who have, the first thought that comes to mind when someone says football is soccer. :) ...how's that for some confusion?

I love the fact that Aussies call soccer, Aussie rules football, and rugby all football. Well, footy to be exact.
